Dark Sector Review & Gameplay Guide
I just finished playing Dark Sector and I have to say it's been a wild ride. I picked it up on a whim after seeing it on sale, and I didn't really know what to expect. The cover art looked kinda cool, with the guy and his weird glaive thing, so I thought why not, let's give it a shot. The game starts off pretty strong, with a decent storyline and some nice atmosphere. You play as Hayden Tenno, a black ops agent who's been infected with some kind of techno-virus that gives him a bunch of crazy powers.
At first, I was really into it. The controls felt pretty tight, and the glaive mechanic was really fun to use. You can throw it at enemies, and then recall it to you, which was pretty satisfying. The game also has a pretty sweet aftertouch feature, where you can steer the glaive after you've thrown it, which added a whole new level of strategy to the combat. But as I got further into the game, I started to notice some things that bugged me. For one, the level design can be pretty repetitive at times. You'll find yourself walking through the same-looking corridors and rooms over and over again, which got kinda boring.
The enemies in the game are also kinda lame. They're all just generic soldiers or zombies, with no real personality or variation. And don't even get me started on the bosses - they're all just big, lumbering creatures that you have to whittle down with your glaive. It's not like they have any real strategy or patterns to them, you just kinda mash the attack button until they die. The game also has some pretty bad pacing issues. There are times where you'll be running along, having a good time, and then suddenly you'll hit a wall and have to fight like 20 guys in a row. It's just too much, and it feels like the game is trying to pad out its length or something.
Despite all these complaints, I still had a pretty good time playing Dark Sector. The game's got a certain charm to it, and the story is actually pretty interesting. The techno-virus thing is a cool concept, and I liked seeing how it affected Hayden and the world around him. The graphics are also pretty nice, with some sweet lighting and texture effects. And like I said, the glaive mechanic is just plain fun to use. So if you're a fan of action games or just looking for something to play, I'd say Dark Sector is worth checking out. Just don't expect it to blow your mind or anything.
One thing that really stood out to me was the sound design. The game's got a really good soundtrack, with some pounding electronic beats that really get you pumped up. The sound effects are also top-notch, with some really satisfying glaive-throwing and gun-firing noises. It's just too bad that the rest of the game can't quite live up to the quality of the sound design. Overall, I'd say Dark Sector is a solid, if unspectacular, game. It's not going to win any awards or anything, but it's a fun way to pass the time if you're looking for something to play.
Overall, I'm glad I picked up Dark Sector. It's not the best game I've ever played, but it's definitely worth playing if you're a fan of action games. Just be prepared for some repetitive level design and lame enemies, and you'll be golden. And who knows, you might even find yourself having a good time, like I did. So if you see it on sale or something, I'd say go for it. Just don't pay full price or anything, because it's not worth it.
