Pixel Commando Review & Gameplay Guide

I've been playing Pixel Commando for a few days now, and I've got to say, it's been a bit of a mixed bag for me. At first, I was really drawn in by the retro-style pixel graphics and the promise of a challenging run-and-gun action game. The game definitely delivers on that front - the visuals are super charming, with a great attention to detail in the environments and characters. The soundtrack is also pretty catchy, with a nice blend of chiptune sounds that really add to the overall atmosphere of the game.

But as I started playing, I began to realize that the gameplay is a bit more shallow than I was expecting. Don't get me wrong, the action is fast-paced and intense, and it's definitely satisfying to take down enemies with a well-placed grenade or a quick burst of gunfire. However, the levels can start to feel a bit repetitive after a while, with the same basic layout and enemy patterns repeating over and over. I also found that the difficulty curve is a bit wonky - some levels are a total breeze, while others are almost impossibly hard, with no real indication of what's causing the spike in difficulty.

One thing that I do appreciate about Pixel Commando is the variety of unlockables and upgrades that you can access as you progress through the game. There are a bunch of different characters to unlock, each with their own unique abilities and strengths, and you can also upgrade your guns and equipment to give yourself an edge in combat. This adds a bit of replay value to the game, as you'll want to go back and try to unlock everything. However, I do wish that the upgrades had a bit more impact on the gameplay - as it is, they mostly just feel like minor tweaks, rather than major game-changers.

Despite my criticisms, I'm still having a lot of fun playing Pixel Commando. The game has a certain infectious energy to it, and it's hard not to get caught up in the excitement of blasting your way through hordes of enemies. The game also has a great sense of humor, with some really funny and over-the-top cutscenes and character designs. If you're a fan of retro-style action games, I'd definitely recommend checking out Pixel Commando - just be aware that it's not going to blow you away with its depth or complexity.

That being said, I do think that Pixel Commando could benefit from a bit more polish and refinement. The controls can feel a bit slippery at times, and there are some minor bugs and glitches that can pop up here and there. Nothing game-breaking, but it's still a bit annoying. I'd also love to see some more variety in the level design - as it is, things can start to feel a bit samey after a while. Still, the game's charms are enough to outweigh its flaws, and I'd definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a fun, lighthearted action game.

Overall, I'd say that Pixel Commando is a solid, if not spectacular, game. It's not going to win any awards for originality or depth, but it's a fun, exciting ride that's sure to appeal to fans of old-school action games. With a bit more development and refinement, I think this game could really be something special - as it is, it's still a great way to pass the time and have some fun. If you're looking for a quick, easy gaming fix, Pixel Commando is definitely worth checking out.
